In response to increasing cases of the B.1.617.2 (commonly referred to as the Indian variant, UNISON has repeatedly called on the government to publish data on the spread of this and other new variants in schools.

UNISON was the first to raise this issue, which led to an investigation by the Observer, which suggested that the Prime Minister’s Office ‘tried to block’ the publication of this data. UNISON has now written to the Secretary of State for Education, Gavin Williamson, alongside other education unions, urging that the data be released now and demanding an explanation for the delay.
