On 1st May workers around the world stand up for their rights and celebrate their culture.
Celebrating May Day as International Workers’ Day began as a commemoration of the Chicago Haymarket massacre on 1st May 1886, when strikers and police were killed and four protest leaders were hung after 300,000 workers walked off the job for an 8-hour day.
Wolverhampton Trades Council organised the first local May Day rally six years later in 1892 with 7,000 people attending.
